Why You Can Grieve a Change You Chose

You wanted this. The new job, the move, the baby, the relationship ending because it needed to. So why does it feel like something broke instead of something beginning?

This catches a lot of women off guard. There's an assumption that grief only belongs to loss you didn't choose, so when a chosen change still hurts, it can feel confusing, even like you're doing it wrong. You're not. Grief isn't about whether you wanted the change. It's about what the change cost you, and that cost is real either way.

What Life Transitions Actually Take From You

Even a good transition asks you to let go of something: a routine, an identity, a version of your life that was familiar even if it wasn't working. New motherhood can mean grieving your independence. A career change can mean grieving the professional identity you built for years. A breakup, even one you initiated, can mean grieving the future you'd pictured.

None of that makes the choice wrong. It just makes it human.

Signs You're in a Transition That Needs Support

  • Feeling untethered, like you don't recognize your own routine or sense of self
  • Guilt for grieving something you chose to leave
  • Pressure to have it all figured out already, when really you just started
  • Identity questions that keep surfacing: who am I now, if not who I was before
  • Handling it mostly on your own, because it doesn't look like the kind of hard that gets casseroles

What Helps During a Transition

The goal isn't to rush past the discomfort or force yourself to feel grateful faster. It's to make sense of what you're actually grieving, get clear on what you want now (not what you think you're supposed to want), and rebuild a sense of self that isn't dependent on your circumstances staying the same.

Life transitions therapy gives that process a place to happen with support, instead of white-knuckling it alone until it eventually settles.

If You're in the Middle of One of These Right Now

Whether the change was your choice or not, it's allowed to be hard. You don't have to earn the right to feel unsteady, and you don't have to wait until you're further into it to ask for help.
